Using the LPD gateway with InfoPrint Manager for Linux

You can use the InfoPrint Manager for Linux line printer daemon (ipmlpd) to receive jobs through the LPD Gateway to an InfoPrint Linux server. InfoPrint Manager LPD is a subsystem that lets you submit print jobs from other operating systems using a Line Printer (LPR) client. InfoPrint Manager LPD submits the files it receives directly to an InfoPrint Manager destination and supports the -o options that are available with the some LPR clients. (-o options allow you to specify advanced InfoPrint Manager print options, such as form definitions and page definitions. To configure to use the InfoPrint Manager LPD protocol you need to verify if any LPD daemons or processes that do not belong to InfoPrint Manager (for example, the Common UNIX Printing System [CUPS] LPD daemon) are running on the same system, stop them.

The LPD protocol defines a print command called lpr. You can use the lpr command, or several other commands that use the LPD protocol, to submit jobs from AIX, Linux or Windows systems to InfoPrint Manager for Linux LPD destinations. You can also send jobs using the LPD protocol from other systems, such as z/OS. Syntax and available options vary from one print command to another and from one version of lpr to another. You might have to adapt examples of print commands for your own system.

You might also have to configure the sending system to compensate for options that your print command does not provide. For example, if the print command does not have an option for specifying a print server, you must create a remote print queue on the sending system with the same name as the LPD destination.
