Understanding attachment types for PSF actual destinations

The attachment type for an actual destination defines how the printer device attaches to the Windows system and communicates with InfoPrint Manager for Windows. Based on the printer device, the attachment type is one of these:

TCP/IP
The printer device communicates using IPDS and attaches to the Windows system through the TCP/IP network. To create the actual destination, you must specify the Internet Protocol (IP) address of the printer device and the port number through which InfoPrint Manager communicates with the device. The port number for TCP/IP-attached printers is an integer from 5001 to 65535.
Command
Before you create a PSF command actual destination, you must attach the printer device as specified by its documentation. If you are using this device for converting data to PCL to print on a PCL printer, make sure that you review Processing concerns when using the PCL Secondary.
Other-Driver
The PCL printer device communicates using TCP/IP or attaches directly to the Windows system through a parallel or serial port. To create the actual destination, you must specify the port associated with a port monitor needed to operate the PCL printer. If you are using this device for converting data to PCL to print on a PCL printer, make sure that you review Processing concerns when using the PCL Secondary.

Use Selecting an attachment type for PSF actual destinations to determine the appropriate attachment type for PSF actual destinations.

Selecting an attachment type for PSF actual destinations

If you are sending this data stream to the printer: IPDS PCL4, PCL5, PCL5c, PCL6 or PPDS PCL4, PCL5, PCL5c, PCL6 or PPDS
and you are going to attach the printer to the system where InfoPrint Manager is running this way: over the TCP/IP network over the TCP/IP network OR directly attaching it through a parallel or serial port over the TCP/IP network using a command such as lpr to submit jobs to it
Select this attachment type: TCP/IP Other-driver Command

To configure a PSF-other Driver printer to not transform certain input data formats, you use the InfoPrint Manager Administration GUI to do this configuration task. After you create the PSF Other-Driver attached printer with the Create Printer Wizard, you must go into the Printer Properties notebook for the printer and modify the Formats to RIP at destination field to configure your actual destination for passthru PCL and PostScript jobs. The Formats to RIP at destination field can be found on the Document tab of the Printer Properties notebook when all the available properties are displayed. It might be necessary to click Show More to display all the printer properties.

Highlight both PCL and the PostScript (or only one of the two, depending upon what data types your actual destination supports natively) from the Formats to RIP at destination list of possible values, and click on the Add>> button.

You can specify other values besides PCL and PostScript because you might have a destination that can accept them directly. For example, your printer might accept PDF or ASCII.

Note: You must avoid specifying particular InfoPrint Manager attributes to make sure that jobs are not transformed.
