PSF-other DSS

To submit jobs to a PCL printer in formats other than those the printer accepts (such as PDF, GIF, or a SAP data stream), then driving your printer with a PSF-other DSS is a good choice. You can even configure it to bypass transforming some document formats while transforming all others.

By default, a PSF-other DSS transforms all incoming document formats to PCL4, PCL5, PCL5C, PCL6, or PPDS. PCL color or monochrome printers are supported by CUPS printing system, you only need the PPD file for your PCL printer. Because the PSF-other DSS drives the printer just like a CUPS DSS, everything about the CUPS DSS applies. If you want to use the InfoPrint Manager enhanced CUPS backends (pioinfo or piorpdm) to obtain accurate job completion and job accounting information, you need to know the port number for your printer.

The CUPS DSS destination command for the InfoPrint Manager enhanced backends can be one of the following:

  • pioinfo://ip-address:[port-number]
  • piorpdm://ip-address:[port-number].
By using one of the CUPS backends, the CUPS DSS provides the same support as the CUPS printing system, such as encryption and other security features over the Internet Printing protocol (IPP). Refer to the CUPS documentation for more details about CUPS, the CUPS backends, and the CUPS implementation of IPP.

The CUPS DSS destination command for the CUPS backends can be one of the following:

  • ipps://ip-address:443/ipp/print
  • socket://ip-address
  • lpd://ip-address/queue.

To configure a PSF Other printer not to transform certain input data formats, you use the InfoPrint Manager Administration GUI to perform this configuration task. After you create the PSF Other attached printer with the Create Printer Wizard, you must go into the Printer Properties notebook for the printer and modify the Formats to RIP at destination field to configure your actual destination for passthru PCL and PostScript jobs. The Formats to RIP at destination field can be found on the Document tab of the Printer Properties notebook when all the available properties are displayed. It might be necessary to click Show More to display all the printer properties.

Highlight both PCL and the PostScript (or only one of the two, depending upon what data types your actual destination supports natively) from the Formats to RIP at destination list of possible values, and click Add>>.

You can specify other values besides PCL and PostScript because you can have a destination that can accept them directly. For example, your printer might accept ASCII.

To print PDF documents directly, select PDF from the Formats to RIP at destination list and click Add....

Note: As the following sections indicate, you must avoid specifying particular InfoPrint Manager attributes to ensure that jobs are not transformed.
