    Edit, Fill, Read (default)
A password is required to open the file. You can use either the Document open password or Permissions password.
    • If you open the file with the Permissions password, you have full control over the file. You can read, edit, comment, and add markup.
    • If you open the file with the Document open password, you can only review the contents. To edit the file, you must enter the Permissions password.
    Edit, Fill
No password is required to open the file. To edit the PDF file or fill in any form fields, enter the Permissions password.
    Edit
No password is required to open the file or fill in any form fields. To edit the PDF file, enter the Permissions password.
  • The Document open password is used only when Password-protected actions is set to Edit, Fill, Read AND you require two levels of access to the file.

Give the Document open password to downstream recipients or applications that open the file with read only access. Give the Permissions password to recipients who need to edit the PDF file or fill in forms inside it.

If you set the Document open password when the Password-protected actions are Edit, Fill or Edit, the Document open password is never used.
