Stopping and starting one primary server

Use this procedure to take one primary server offline for maintenance while the other primary server continues processing.

In a multiple primary servers environment, you can stop one primary server without disrupting the system. The behavior depends on which server you stop:

  • If you stop the lead primary server, the alternate primary server detects the failure and takes over processing. This transition completes within two minutes.
  • If you stop the alternate primary server, the lead primary continues processing without interruption.
  1. To stop one of the primary servers in the system:
    1. Log in to the server as the system user (aiw1 is the default).
    2. Type this command: stopaiw
    When the command finishes processing:
    • If you stopped the lead primary server, processing transfers to the other server. This server is now the lead primary.
    • If you stopped the alternate primary server, processing continues on the lead primary as usual.
  2. To start the primary server again:
    1. Log in to the server as the system user (aiw1 is the default).
    2. Type this command: startaiw
The server starts and assumes the role of alternate primary server.
